Website Content Gathering Guide

Content precedes design - Jeffrey Zeldman

This handy guide will assist you in gathering the information we will need in order to develop your website. Please keep in mind that any text, photographs, illustrations, white papers, videos, etc., should be given to us before work commences. Not having these ready and available for the designer when we begin your project will delay the completion date of your project, and cost you more. All materials provided should be in their final version.  Any changes which have to be made after we begin will cost additional time and money.

□ Website Content
The most important component of any site is its content. Will you be doing the copyrighting, or will you hire someone to do this on your behalf? If you decide to do it on your own, here are some tips:

  • Decide what pages you will be needing, based on the information you plan to provide.
For example, based on the information you want to provide on your website, you know you will need a 'Home' page, an 'About Us' page, a 'Testimonials' page, as well as a 'Services' page.
  • Write content for the pages you decide to provide on your website.
Now that you know what pages your site will have, you can begin copyrighting each page separately. It will be easier for you (and us) if you type each page in a Microsoft Word document (or similar program).
  • Whenever possible, include keywords throughout your text.

□ Images
The images you select for your website help set the quality and mood of your site. It is very important to use high quality, professional looking images on your site if you wish to maintain a professional look. Following are some guidelines for submitting images to us:

  • Large, high resolution images are preferred.
Although the final image will be published on the web at a lower resolution and size, a higher resolution enables us to better optimize any photographs (where necessary,) and allows us to re-size as needed.
  • Obtain proper permissions when applicable.
Please be sure that all elements of text, graphics, photos, designs, trademarks, or other artwork furnished to us for inclusion in web pages are owned by you, or that you have permission from the rightful owner to use each of these elements. Writing your own text and capturing your own images with your camera is the best way to protect yourself from copyright infringement.
